Northern Westchester's own Cluxatawney Henrietta has just given her opinion on whether or not to expect an early spring.
In an event held on Friday morning, Feb. 2 at Muscoot Farm, located on Route 100 in Somers near the borders of Katonah, and Yorktown, iconic weather hen Cluxatawney Henrietta laid an egg and predicted that an early spring would soon arrive to bring life back to Westchester.
Before her prediction was revealed, Westchester County Parks Department First Deputy Commissioner Peter Tartaglia introduced Henrietta to an audience of young children.
"We all know technically today is Groundhog Day, but here at Muscoot Farm, it's Hen Day," Tartaglia said, adding, "We have the smartest hen of them all."
Muscoot Farm staff then read her prediction in the form of a poem written in "chicken scratches":
"The barnyard listened, the animals drew near,
As Henrietta foretold with a forecast sincere:
Hear me, dear friends, with feathers so bright,
Spring is approaching, banishing winter's night."
The prediction was welcome news to many children in the crowd, as most of them voted that they had wanted an early spring.
The farm broadcasted the event in a live stream on social media.
"Cluxatawney Henrietta continues to rise to the challenge as our weather predicting animal as we don’t have a groundhog on the farm. She gives groundhogs across the country a run for their money every year!" said Farm Director Jonathon Benjamin.
